People and organizations
that can apply
(General rule) Yokohama City Hall and Ward Offices, Yokohama municipal schools, foreign residents, etc.
*If you are a foreign resident that would like to request an interpreter, please contact the "Interpreter Dispatch Reception Window" at YOKE or an International Lounge.
Application Deadline (General rule) One week prior to dispatch.
Languages available English, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, French, Tagalog, Indonesian, Russian, others
Volunteer interpreters CAN interpret for: ・Administrative procedures at Yokohama municipal and ward offices
・Individual consultations at Yokohama municipal schools
・Yokohama municipal school home visits
・Application procedures and the like at authorized childcare facilities
etc.
Volunteer interpreters can NOT interpret for: ・Medical services
・School classes
・Events (school entrance ceremony, field day, etc.)
・Parties, etc.

Days interpreters can be dispatched (General rule) Weekdays 8:45 am - 5:15 pm (maximum of 2 hours)
※As a general rule, interpreters cannot be dispatched on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays.
Cost There is no cost to the person who requests the interpreter.
Volunteers receive a transportation allowance from YOKE.
How to apply/How the system works
1. The requester contacts the reception window at YOKE or an International. Lounge (see below).
2. The reception window at YOKE or the International Lounge sends the requester a request form by FAX or E-mail.
3. The requester completes the form and returns it by FAX or E-mail.
  After sending the request form, the requester must be sure to contact the reception window.
(Depending on the dispatch location, some requests must be handled by the reception window at YOKE.)
4. The reception window looks for a volunteer.
5. The volunteer interpreter calls the requester.
Please discuss the content to be interpreted, the location, and other details.
6. The day of the appointment, the volunteer goes to the location and interprets. Afterwards, the volunteer will report to the person in charge of requests.
7. After confirming the contents, sign/stamp, and return to YOKE.

Q.1 Can volunteers be dispatched to national or prefectural administrative offices or national, prefectural, or private welfare facilities or schools?
A.1 No, volunteers cannot be dispatched to national, prefectural, or private administrative offices, facilities, or schools.
Q.2 Can interpreters be dispatched to hospitals?
A.2 This program relies on the goodwill of its volunteers to provide interpretation services. For this reason, interpretation at the time of medical treatment, interpretation of classroom lectures, or other interpretation which requires specialized knowledge is beyond the scope of this program.However, administrative procedures such as payment or hospitalization procedures are eligible.

Who can apply ・(General rule) Foreign residents living, working or studying in Yokohama (a representative may apply on behalf of the foreign resident)
・(General rule) Non-profit groups and organizations in Yokohama.
・Others, as deemed appropriate by YOKE
※When eligible for the "Yokohama Citizen Volunteer Interpreter Program", that program will be used.

Fee The fee (honorarium) is decided between the requester and the volunteer.
The expected amount is generally 3000 - 4000 yen each time. Transportation costs for the volunteer are included in this amount.
The requester should pay the volunteer directly on the day of the interpretation.

To register as a volunteer interpreter 
 YOKE is accepting applications from people who can interpret for foreign residents with limited Japanese abilities at Yokohama City Hall and Ward administrative offices, municipal schools, and other such locations.
Please consider putting your language skills to good use assisting foreign residents!

Applications are particularly welcome from people speaking the following languages, which currently have few registered volunteers: Vietnamese, Tagalog, Cambodian, Thai, Lao, and Russian.

(For languages with few volunteers, such as Vietnamese, Tagalog, Cambodian, and others, the above requirements may be waived. )
Cost of transporation YOKE pays 2000 yen for administrative interpreting and 1800 yen for school interpreting, to cover the cost of transportation.
(Paid by bank transfer at a later date.)
Insurance   YOKE is insured against accidents and damages related to interpreting activities.
How to register You can register at YOKE or your nearest International Lounge.
The person in charge may not always be in the office so please be sure to call before coming.
*You cannot register by only mailing in the registration form.

When you come in, please bring the "Volunteer Interpreter Registration Form" with the necessary items completed.

Registration period Registration is effective until the registered volunteer requests that it be cancelled.
However, registration may be terminated in the following situations:
・If the person is found to be unfit to be a volunteer interpreter
・If the person cannot be contacted by phone and email
