Free Vaccinations for Designated Infectious Diseases

Yokohama city provides free vaccinations throughout the year, in cooperation with the Yokohama Medical Association. Please bring your Mother and Child Health Handbook (boshi kenko techo) and the medical questionnaire when you go to take the shots. The vaccinations for this year are: Hib, Pediatric Pneumococcal, DPT-IPV, Diphtheria-Pertussis-Tetanus (DPT), Diphtheria-Tetanus (DT), Inactivated Polio, BCG, MR, Measles, Rubella, Japanese Encephalitis, Cervical Cancer Prevention vaccines. Hib, Pediatric Pneumococcal and Cervical Cancer Prevention vaccines have been designated as regular vaccines from this year.
*Eligible people for Cervical Cancer Prevention vaccine are girls between 6th grade in elementary school to first year in high school.
*Eligibility for BCG has been enlarged to; children from newborn up to 12 months.
*Exceptional eligible people for Japanese Encephalitis has been; those born between June 1, 1995 and April 1, 2007, but those born between April 2, 1995 and May 31, 1995 have been added.

DT (Diphtheria-Tetanus Combined) Vaccine

Eligible recipients: above 11 yrs old and under 13 yrs old. Notice will be sent individually to children who will be 11 yrs old. For this year, eligible recipients are children born between December 2, 2001 and April 1, 2002. Notices have been sent at the end of March, 2013. Please get the shots at cooperating medical institutions.

Financial Support for School Fees

Financially disadvantaged families with children who go to municipal elementary/junior high schools in Yokohama in 2013 may be eligible to receive financial assistance to help cover the costs such as school supplies and school trips.

East Yokohama Youth Plaza Opens

East Yokohama Youth Plaza supports young adults who are struggling to overcome truancy (futoko) and withdrawal from social life (hikikomori), and trying to become independent individuals. East Yokohama Youth Plaza in Tsurumi-ku is the fourth such one in the city. It is run by an authorized NPO, Sodateage Net, in cooperation with the city of Yokohama.

Application for Municipal Housing Units

Applicants must be over 20 yrs of age, have lived or worked in Yokohama for the past six months minimum. Income restrictions apply. *Type of room depends on applicants’ age and/or number of family members.
Limit: 522 units *Chosen by lottery.
To Apply: Between Apr.10 and Apr.19, please apply by filling in the application form available at the Public Relation Section (Koho Sodan Kakari) or your local ward office or at Administrative Service Corners (Gyosei Service Corner). *Entries must be postmarked by Apr.19.

Application for Elderly People’s Public Housing

These housing units authorized by the city are for people over 60 years old. A lottery will be held for 20 housing units in Izumi-ku Nakata Minami, which will be available from October, 2013. These apartments are designed to provide a safe environment for senior citizens, such as having emergency call services. *There is no nursing care. *An income-dependent rent subsidy is available.
Eligibility: People who are living or working in Yokohama and are 60 yrs or over at the time of application.
To Apply: Fill out an application form available at your local ward office’s Public Relation Section (Koho Sodan Kakari) or at Administrative Service Corners (Gyosei Service Corner). *Entries must be postmarked by April 30.

Application for “Yokohama Live-in” Housing Units

Lottery registration will be accepted for those wishing to be on the family unit waiting list. Income restrictions apply. Financial aid is available for those who are eligible. As for units that are currently available, applications are accepted on a first come first served basis.

Useful Administrative Information for Foreign Citizens

For those of you who would like to register your new address or register your seal (inkan toroku):
In Japan, the new school year begins in April, and also many people get newly employed, move out or move into the city around this time of the year. Therefore, ward offices, in April and May, get very crowded with people who would like to register their new addresses and do other registrations. Please keep the following in mind before you visit the ward office:
(1) Check the method of registration
Please bring your resident card (zairyu card) or your alien registration card. When you move out of the city, you submit a notification of moving out (tenshutsu todoke) and receive a moving out certification (tenshutsu shomeisho) to the ward office of your old address. *This used to be unnecessary for foreign residents, but now the procedure for necessary for everyone who is moving out of the city. Then, you submit this certification to the city you are moving into. When you move to another ward within Yokohama, you simply submit the notification of moving in (ten-nyu todoke). Other registration at the ward office is not necessary.
(2) Check the date you wish to go to the ward office
At the same time as the registration of your new address, you might also need to register for National Health Insurance (Kokumin Kenko Hoken) or the National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin). Please go to the ward office when you have enough time.
Office Open Hours: 8:45 to 17:00 on weekdays (except holidays)
Crowded days and hours: 11:00-15:00, Mondays, Fridays, 2nd and 4th Saturdays
(3) If you cannot go on weekdays
Ward offices are open on 2nd and 4th Saturdays. Simple registrations such as resident registration can be accepted on these days, but some other complicated matters may not be handled. Please check with the resident registration section before your visit.
(4) You can get a residence certificate, seal registration certificate and some tax-related certificates at train stations
Administrative Service Corners are located in 13 train stations such as Shin Yokohama, Hiyoshi, and Yokohama. You can get copies of your residence certificate (jumin-hyo)/ seal registration certificate (inkan toroku shomeisho)/ tax slips for residence tax (shimin-zei) and prefectural tax (kenmin-zei)/ certificate for payment of municipal tax (shi zei). *Please note that only those who reside in the city of Yokohama can get copies of the residence certificate and tax certificates.

Izumi Multicultural Symbiotic Corner Opens

On February 4, 2013, Izumi Ward opened a Multicultural Symbiotic Corner (Tabunka Kyosei Corner) within the Residents’ Activities Support Center. The new consultation counter provides useful information in various languages in order for foreign residents to live conveniently. It also supports activities relating to international exchange and multicultural symbiosis such as lectures and volunteer work. It is an 11th International Lounge in the city of Yokohama.
Open Hours: Mon, Tue, Thu 9:00-16:00
2nd and 4th Sat 9:00-12:00 (it is closed when the ward office is closed.)
